For the longest time, I have been a bit of an anime fan. I watch all different kinds, but some just have a special place in my heart, and this is one of them. The anime in question is called Fairy Tail, and it follows the adventures of a young wizard as she joins a magical guild and makes new friends. It's funny, heartwarming, and uplifting, and it just makes me feel good to watch it.

The pattern I have chosen for the cushion design is the mark that all of the guild members have, it's a little like a tattoo, and they all have them in different colours. As I am on a mission to use up stash, I went for this bright pink and dark purple combo in an aran-weight cotton. The dark purple is unfortunately a discontinued yarn, but it's pretty identical to the pink one, which is Drops Paris; both come in 50g balls. You can, of course, use whatever yarn you prefer; this is just what I had available. I used just under 4 balls of the pink and 1 of the purple, so it was a great way to get some stash busted. If you just want to do a single panel, you can also just use the chart and make a wall hanging, and if you would rather do it in a standard crochet or knit version, you can totally do that. Just remember that the size will change as the stitches are different.

And with that, onto the pattern......

You will need:

Approx 200g of your main colour and 50g of your contract colour, I used aran weight cotton

6mm tunisian hook, either long enough to accommodate the stitches or with a cable attached

Yarn needle to sew the panels together

Cushion pad approx 16x16 inches

Gauge:

My gauge for this project was 14st x 14 rows over 4 inches in TSS, however, it's not super important as long as it's not off by a crazy amount or if it's too loose so you see through it. If you make the panel a little smaller, you can always add extra border rows to make it up to the cushion size. Also, not all cushions are created equal, and some will be fluffier than others!

Abbreviations:

It is assumed that for this pattern, you know the basics of Tunisian crochet.

TSS = Tunisian simple stitch

ES = End stitch

sc = single crochet

ch = chain

MC = main colour

CC = contrast colour

Notes:

I chose to carry the yarn behind my work as I knew it would be hidden inside the cushion. If you prefer working with separate balls, you can totally do that too, just remember that no matter which method you use, you need to twist the yarns over each other when you switch colours to stop holes from forming. Do not pull the yarn too tight or the fabric will pucker.

Return pass will always be a standard return pass, changing colours as required. On the return pass, the colour you pull through will be whatever the 2nd colour on the hook is.

Start crocheting here......

Main panel

Ch 41

Row 1: Using MC, Starting with the 2nd from the hook, work into the back bump of the chains. Pull up a loop in each chain across, working through the top v of the last stitch.

Rows 2-8: TSS in MC

Rows 9-35: Follow chart, changing colours as required

Rows 36-43: TSS in MC

bind off

Using CC, join your yarn at any point and sc around the panel. In the corners I did (sc,ch1, sc). This is where you can adjust your size to fit your cushion size or your yarn amount. I did 5 rounds of CC and kept enough to join the panels together.

Back panel

I did a plain back panel in my MC. You can, of course, do anything you prefer.

Ch 41

Row 1: Using MC, starting with the 2nd from the hook, work into the back bump of the chains. Pull up a loop in each chain across, working through the top v of the last stitch.

Rows 2-43: TSS in MC

bind off

To keep it the same, I did the sc rounds on the back panel as well, but I used my MC.

Once both panels are finished, simply crochet or sew them together on 3 sides, insert the cushion, then close up the last side. I chose to use a slip stitch to attach mine, but you can sew, use a sc or any other method you prefer.

And there we go, you have your very own squishy fairy tail cushion, I hope you loved making it and it brings you joy to snuggle with it.
